In a Classic Showdown battle between two of the area’s unbeaten softball heavyweights, the Riverton Rotary Club charged back from a 6-2 deficit to defeat the Lander Rotary Club 7-6 on Saturday.  The thrilling tussle took place at the Hudson City Ballpark, where the two clubs recently worked together to paint the dugouts and stain the ticket booth.  Attendance figures for the game are being audited and injury reports are still being verified.  Best of all, the game raised money for The Rotary Foundation!  Lander Rotary participants included the Case boys,  Cale and George, who spearheaded the fun afternoon, Eddie Lobatos, Jim Kniola, Shelby and Noah Rohrbacher, Maria Kidner, Will and Karen Almas, John Brown, Mandy and Stokes Fabel, Bryan Neely, and Joe Quiroz.

 

The joint annual Gavel Exchange for the Lander and Riverton Rotary Clubs, when next year’s officers take their oath of office, will take place at the Reach Foundation, 622 N. 8^th Street, Riverton, on Wednesday, June 26, starting at 5:30 p.m.  Members’ meal costs are covered; guests are $25.  Cash bar.  See Mandy’s June 12 email for the registration link.

The club’s $123,096 Global Grant project to train village nurses in Rwanda has been given final approval by the staff of The Rotary Foundation, so:  IT’S A GO!!  Maria Kidner and Cassy Venters will be joined on the three-person Vocational Training Team by Julie Carragher, a nursing practitioner doctoral candidate from Boston, MA. They will leave for Rwanda on July 9 and return on August 18.  They will conduct numerous sessions to train front-line nurses to diagnose and treat strep throat and prevent often-fatal rheumatic heart disease in children.  

 

And there’s an added bonus:  The team has been invited by government officials to visit Zambia to discuss implementing a similar training program for Zambian nurses in the next year or two.  They will visit Zambia before starting the training sessions in Rwanda.

 

Fourteen Lander and Riverton Rotarians and family members packed 300 Summer Adventure Bags on June 1 for distribution to children this summer on the Shoshoni and Arapahoe reservations.  The club received a $5,000 District Grant for this project.  And the club has applied for a $5,000 District Grant for next year to continue converting solar panels to cell phone chargers to send to the people of war-torn Ukraine.
