Copper Canyon – As Cool as It Sounds
Copper Canyon Scholars provides scholarships to the small Tarahumara Indian tribe living in the Copper Canyon region of Chihuahua state in northern Mexico. For the last 17 years, the Lander Rotary Club has supported scholarships for high school and university students. Since 2012, Lander Rotary has donated $17,000 to Canyon Scholars.
Lander Rotarians Ken Schreuder, Carol Chidsey and Joe Quiroz and several Lander H.S. Interact members traveled to the area in 2006 and 2008 to work on school improvement projects “It was a life-changing experience for all of us,” Ken says. Canyon Scholars does not operate a school currently; it counsels and assists students and their families in educational planning and provides scholarships to pay the costs of attending school. Today, most of the students attend classes through on-line learning.
The club donation for 2022-2023 will be $2,000. Additional funds may be possible through a district grant which would enable u to provide more scholarships. The scholarship costs are $250/year for middle school students, $500/year for high school students, and $750/year for university. How Can World Polio Day Be Fun?
World Polio Day is October 24 every year! Lander and Riverton Rotary Clubs are focused on FUN with competitions to raise funds through a golf marathon, a cornhole tournament, and special 20% off Pizza Hut coupons. The competitions will cover the month of October. More information in coming weeks!
Leslie Calkins will be exploring Purple Pinkie options with the school personnel and Interact Club as soon as school opens. As well, Assistant Governor John Brown will be asking the Thermopolis Club to join in the competitions!
